Some organic dairy producers say they will stop advertising on milk labels that the cows weren’t given synthetic growth hormones because of a new rule approved by the state.
Lawmakers signed off on the change Monday that will require a disclaimer to be placed immediately following a label that says a dairy product is made without the synthetic hormones. The disclaimer says there is no significant difference between milk produced by cows receiving the synthetic hormone and cows that do not.
Some dairy producers who don’t treat their cows with bovine growth hormone say that it will simply be easier not to have a label on the milk than comply with the new rule. The disclaimer is currently required, but not in a specific place on the label.
