Of the many things to worry about in life, should the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) be added to the list?
Anxiety intensified last week when the federal government’s National Toxicology Program said that BPA, used in everything from certain plastic water and baby bottles to the liners of food containers, raises “some concern” for fetuses and babies.
Reaction in the marketplace was predictably swift. Wal-Mart announced it would soon stop selling baby bottles with BPA. The maker of the popular Nalgene hard plastic water bottles announced it would stop using the substance and instead offer a BPA-free water bottle. On Monday, Toys ‘R’ Us announced that it was phasing out products with BPA.
Whether this is a prudent precaution or an overreaction isn’t yet clear. But there are enough reasonable doubts about BPA that government regulators should be conducting a public review in an effort to clear them up. Instead, the Food and […]
