Jack N. Gerard, president and CEO of the American Chemistry Council, a trade group for leading chemical companies, writes that recent media reports about the safety and use of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins have unnecessarily confused and frightened the public.
Last week, Canada’s national health care program made an announcement fundamentally affirming the safety of bisphenol A (BPA), a key ingredient in those materials, yet it also said it was moving to withdraw some consumer products from the marketplace.
The week before, the U.S. National Toxicology Program issued a draft report registering “some concern” with BPA, yet affirming overall the chemical’s safety. The science says the substance is safe, yet the news media coverage implies that people should stop using these products. What’s a consumer to do?
The public needs reliable information on which to base health decisions. BPA has an extraordinarily rich scientific database that supports its safety.
