The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Developments Cultivation Department and the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development were cited as finding that while many areas used for agricultural production are certified as clean vegetable growing areas in accordance with the ministrys standards, most vegetable samples and water tests taken from irrigation sources contained high levels of toxins.
The study found that in the northern provinces of Hung Yen, Ha Nam and Bac Ninh, five out of 11 vegetable samples had excessive amounts of E. coli; 10 contained excessive levels of lead; eight had excessive cadmium content; and 10 tested positive for mercury.
In Hanoi, four out of nine soil samples were found to contain lead and copper exceeding acceptable levels safe for human consumption and the majority of water samples in irrigation areas tested positive for E. coli.
