AUSTRALIA: Time to eat, drink and be wary - (Sydney Morning Herald)

April 17, 2008 – 10:38 pm

Of the many different strains of salmonella that poison tens of thousands of Australians a year, Saintpaul is a relatively rare one. Usually, only one or two cases a month are detected in NSW.
So when 25 cases were reported in a fortnight, alarm bells rang.
Suspicion soon fell on rockmelons as the source of the bacteria, with most of the sick people saying they had recently eaten the fruit.
Dr Craig Shadbolt, the manager of the Foodborne Illness Investigation Unit at the NSW Food Authority, was cited as saying the link, 18 months ago, was surprising, adding, “It was the first time that rockmelons had ever been implicated in an outbreak in Australia.”
