EDMONTON The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association wants the federal government to, according to this story, pony up $50 million to help the beef industry deal with the cost of meeting feed ban rules brought in to help prevent mad cow disease.
Beleaguered producers, already faced with the high price of feed and the soaring loonie, say the cost of properly disposing of dead cattle and certain carcass parts known as specified risk material is a growing burden.
Association President Brad Wildeman warns that without federal financial assistance more producers will get out of the cattle business and more Canadian packing plants could close.
Wildeman suggested Agriculture Canada doesn’t appear to appreciate how serious the situation is.
