It is, according to this editorial, reassuring to be reminded that the likelihood is small of anyone being harmed by the beef involved in a recent 143 million-pound recall.
Less reassuring is the fact that the meat was produced over the two-year period prior to February 2008, so much of it had been eaten before the problem became known at the consumer level. Some 30 Michiana school systems received beef from the 37 million pounds that had been used for school lunches.
And least reassuring of all? That it wasn’t the U.S. Department of Agriculture that figured out sick cows were being slaughtered by the Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. The condition of the cattle was revealed through an undercover investigation by the Humane Society of the United States, even though USDA officials reportedly had been on site at the slaughterhouse.
