France’s Agriculture Ministry was cited as ordering on Saturday lots of ricotta cheese allegedly contaminated with Listeria bacteria pulled from shelves, a day after giving the green light to resume selling a prized mozzarella from Italy.
The ban was limited to certain lots of a single brand, “Ricotta Salata” made by Pieve San Giacomo. It was unclear how much of the imported ricotta the lots covered.
Two tests in Germany confirmed the presence of a high rate of Listeria monocytogenes, the ministry statement said, adding that such cheese should not be consumed.
Listeria is a microorganism that can cause serious or fatal infections in children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.
