MICHIGAN: Hormones in milk debate is about money, experts say - (Lansing State Journal)

Money is, according to this story, one of the main issues in the debate about using a synthetic growth hormone, called rBST, which increases milk production in cows.
That’s true for both farmers and milk buyers alike.
The story explains that earlier this year, Michigan’s largest dairy cooperative, Michigan Milk Producers Association, followed suit with grocery chains that have set policies against buying milk from cows in which rBST is used.
The cooperative banned use by all its 1,515 members, meaning every dairy farmer in Southeast Michigan will be compelled to discontinue use of the hormone.
Jim Reid, director of the Michigan Milk Producers Association and a St. Clair County dairy farmer, was quoted as saying, “Production will curtail, tighten supply, and the price of milk will skyrocket.”
