Food authorities are testing the safety of New Zealand’s fresh produce after rising overseas rates of stomach bugs linked to pathogens on leafy vegetables.
Imported and domestically grown fruit and vegetables in Christchurch and Auckland supermarkets will be targeted, as well as produce from farmers’ markets and specialist organic shops.
Fresh greens will be tested for campylobacter, salmonella and E. coli bacteria on behalf of the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA).
In the United States, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention found food-borne disease outbreaks from leafy greens rose 60 per cent between 1996 and 2005, while consumption of these products increased only 9%.
An outbreak of E. coli in spinach in the US killed three people and made more than 200 sick in September 2006.
