The Victorian Government has rejected a plan to set up a website to publicly name and shame dodgy restaurants convicted for food safety breaches.
But it has confirmed that businesses caught breaching food safety rules will be hit with on-the-spot council fines averaging $750 in a bid to improve public health and compliance.
A review by the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission has concluded that the Government could save about $34 million a year by paring back red tape for food standards, particularly for charities, schools and community groups.
In a recommendation agreed to by Treasurer John Lenders, the review said local councils should be given powers to issue on-the-spot fines. It estimated there would be around 2100 issued annually, raising about $1.5 million.
The commission also recommended that businesses successfully prosecuted in court should have their names on the Department of Human Services website.
