The Tasmanian Greens today called on the Lennon government to develop new protocols to lessen the impact of Salmonella outbreaks on retail food outlets, which have often been devastated by negative publicity despite not being responsible in any way for an outbreak.
Greens Shadow Deputy Leader Nick McKim MP, who attended a breakfast function in support of the staff and owners of Venus Café this morning, said that the government should commission an external review of all aspects of its response to the seven Salmonella outbreaks in Tasmania since 2005, including delays in publicly naming the battery farm linked to all of those outbreaks.
It was great to see the local community supporting Venus Café today, but if the governments handling of the Salmonella crisis had been better, the impacts on people like Venus Café could have been mitigated or prevented, Mr McKim said.
