The number of complaints about meat supplied by E.coli butcher to schools shot up in the months before the outbreak, the public inquiry has heard.
Bridgend Council admitted that there were 19 complaints in the space of just a few months in 2005, but in previous years complaints had been rare.
The complaints related to poor quality of meat - including funny colours and smells - and problems with delivery.
It has been speculated that the rise in complaints coincided with a change in the menus for Bridgend schools, when more cooked meats were introduced into school pupils’ diets.
A school cook later told the police investigation into the death of five-year-old Deri Primary School pupil Mason Jones, that she thought Tudor was intentionally hiding poor quality meat, which was “fatty and grisly”, in the middle of joints to make up the weight.
