“Are we better off than we were 100 years ago?” That’s just one of the rhetorical questions plaintiff attorney Bill Marler of Marler Clark law firm posed this morning at the Congressional Committee on Energy and Commerce. He was referring back to the time when reformer Upton Sinclair published “The Jungle.”
From the expose about conditions at Hallmark/Westland, the answer is most likely: No, things have not gotten better - not for people, not for animals.
At 9:00 AM, Marler began testifying about the gaps in ensuring safety of the food supply chain and made recommendations about how to fix them. Surprisingly, Marler did not advocate lawsuits with stiff certain penalties.
