Washington, D.C.–Larry Pope, chief executive of Smithfield Foods, the nation’s fifth-largest beef packer and the No. 1 processor of pork, stopped in at a Starbucks after the government announced the largest meat recall in history and got the kind of question a meatpacking executive must dread.
“Should we be eating any more beef?” asked the woman behind the counter.
Pope was quoted as warning a conference of agribusiness leaders that, “Every time an incident like this happens, it hurts everybody in this room.” Consumers “trust that USDA stamp a little bit less. When we go overseas they trust the United States a little bit less.”
Getting that trust back may not be easy.
After a rash of E. coli-related recalls last year, U.S. Agriculture Department officials acknowledged that they didn’t really know what controls meatpackers were using to prevent E. coli contamination.
