USMEF monitoring international reactions to historic beef recall - (Meatingplace.com)

Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. last year exported kidneys and livers to the Ivory Coast and livers to Angola. It hasn’t exported products to Japan or South Korea since at least 2003, according to USDA. Following issuance of the largest beef recall in U.S. history on Sunday, it’s not likely that the company ever will do so again.
Although deemed a Class II recall, it involved the possible and illegal slaughter of downer cattle, animals considered to pose a higher risk of carrying, among other diseases, the export-closing bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Even if Hallmark doesn’t go out of business after taking the financial blow, it’s doubtful it will ever export to major foreign markets such as Japan and South Korea.
Whether Hallmark’s blunder will impact its peers’ ability to gain better access to important foreign export markets is another issue. And the U.S. Meat Export Federation isn’t taking it lightly.
