CALIFORNIA: Media focuses on school lunch program aspect of Hallmark/Westland beef recall - (Meatingplace.com)

Television media coverage of Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co.’s record 143-million-pound beef recall was massive and focused largely on the fact that the Chino, Calif.-based processor supplied the school lunch program.
On the “Today Show” Monday morning, anchor Matt Lauer interviewed Ken Peterson, USDA’s Assistant Administrator, Office of Field Operations for the Food Safety and Inspection Service, and asked, “When we consider some 37 million pounds has been distributed to schools across the country, what do you say to parents, what do you say to children, who may either be about to consume that beef or may have already consumed that beef?”
Peterson outlined the agency’s reasoning behind the agency’s Class II recall designation, saying, “This is an animal humane issue with this plant. We thought it was prudent to move on this information as quickly as we could. This is different than a Class I recall, which [includes] significant food safety hazards.”
