AUSTRALIA: Growing push for egg-farm closure - (The Mercury)
February 18, 2008 – 6:46 pmA veterinary pathologist says closure of an egg farm linked to salmonella is the safest option, while another vet says public health must take priority over business.
Vet pathologist David Obendorf was cited as saying that because of the risk to public health he believed putting supply on hold while testing was done was warranted, adding, “Under the circumstances I think this is a serious smoking gun. There’s prima facie evidence of a direct linkage with a particular supplier and we’ve had several serious salmonella outbreaks and that warrants a complete examination of all aspects of the operation. That includes animal husbandry, food sources, how eggs are handled.”
Hobart vet James Harris was cited as saying public health authorities should take the lead on such an important issue, adding, “If a bird is unduly stressed, for example, there are a lot of decomposing carcasses which are a wonderful culture for bacteria, then […]
