TASMANIA: Government names egg farm at centre of salmonella inquiry - (ABC Australia)
February 15, 2008 – 4:36 pmThe State Government has named the poultry farm at the centre of a recent salmonella investigation.
The General Manager of Biosecurity, Alex Schaap, was cited as saying that the eggs in the latest outbreak were supplied by Pitt Poultry, which has several farms providing eggs to caterers and restaurants.
More than 100 people fell sick in last month’s outbreak in Hobart.
Mr Schaap says Pitt Poultry was forced to outsource its egg cleaning last year but the operation won’t be shut down because the source of the salmonella bacteria still has not been pinpointed, adding, “Certainly we’ve had very good cooperation from the operators of the egg farm, we’ve spent an awful lot of time on the premises. We’ve made, required, a lot of changes to the production system, it’s an exemplary operation at this point.
