TASMANIA: Government again fails to adequately respond to salmonella - (Tasmanian Greens)

February 15, 2008 – 4:37 pm

The Tasmanian Greens today accused the Lennon government of putting Tasmanians lives at risk by failing to properly regulate the egg industry after confirmation this afternoon that Pitts Poultry was the source of the eggs linked to the latest Salmonella outbreak.
Greens Deputy Leader and Consumer Affairs spokesperson Nick McKim MP said that Pitts has now been linked to each of the last seven Salmonella outbreaks, and said that that the Department of Primary Industries and Water (DPIW) has not responded adequately due to a conflict of interest created by its role providing industry support to egg producers, as well as supposedly regulating the same people.
“With each of the last seven Salmonella outbreaks linked to one battery farm there is no doubt that the government’s regulatory approach has failed,” Mr McKim said.
