NEW YORK: Wegmans said now requiring tuna suppliers to test for mercury - (Progressive Grocer)

February 13, 2008 – 7:17 pm

Wegmans Food Market here has reportedly expanded its safeguards on seafood by requiring tuna suppliers to test for mercury levels in their product.
Wegmans has been running in-house tests for mercury on swordfish and tuna “for years,” as well as requiring its swordfish suppliers to do so, company spokeswoman Jeanne Colleluori told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Since a New York Times article ran last month on the high mercury levels in tuna sushi samples taken from 20 Manhattan restaurants and food retailers, the grocer has decided to require its tuna suppliers do the same.
