Reports of ciguatera fish poisoning have been linked to fish harvested from the northern Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.
The FDA confirmed several outbreaks of the illness Tuesday in Washington D.C. and St. Louis, Mo.
The toxic fish linked to the illness were harvested off the coast of Texas in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.
A food safety hazard is likely to occur in grouper, snapper and hogfish captured within 10 miles of the marine sanctuary and amberjack and barracuda captured within 50 miles of the sanctuary, the FDA said.
There is no evidence that fish sold locally are contaminated by the marine algae toxin.
However, concerns from some customers forced Frank Patti Jr., owner of Pensacola’s Joe Patti’s Seafood Company, to purchase his grouper from an East Coast supplier.
