No. of voluntary food product recalls triples in 2007 - (Associated Press)

February 7, 2008 – 6:22 pm

The government-affiliated Food and Agricultural Materials Inspection Center was cited as saying that the number of voluntary recalls of food products by manufacturers and retailers more than tripled in 2007 — to 756 cases from 237 in 2006 — following a series of false-labeling scandals. The number of cases in 2005 was 302.
Analysts said the number of recalls swelled as consumer confidence in food safety deteriorated following a spate of false labeling incidents involving ingredients and fraud involving the alteration of use-by dates.
The figure could shoot up further as the recent outbreak of food poisoning involving Chinese-made frozen dumplings has fueled consumer fear about food safety.
