JAPAN: JT Foods fielded 11 complaints - (Daily Yomiuri Online)
February 7, 2008 – 6:23 pmJT Foods Co., whose frozen gyoza dumplings were recently found to have been contaminated with insecticides, and its parent company Japan Tobacco Inc. had, according to this story, earlier received 11 customer complaints about the unusual taste or abnormalities in the packaging of frozen foods produced by China-based Tianyang Food Processing, before the problem was publicly announced late last month.
According to JT, it retrieved seven items following complaints, but did not closely inspect them on the assumption that they could not have been tainted with pesticides. Therefore, the company concluded the items–both packages of gyoza as well as individual pieces–did not constitute the type of problem that would require the firm to take immediate countermeasures.
JT apologized for the manner in which it handled the retrieved items, saying it lacked imagination.
