American Humane Assn. pushes for real-time video of plant operations - (Meatingplace.com)

The American Humane Association (AHA) is launching an initiative to move the meat processing industry toward adopting a standard of oversight that ultimately would include real-time video feeds from plants, which could be accessible over the Internet.
The Denver-based organization announced its plans this week in the wake of animal abuses at Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. of Chino, Calif. The brutal treatment was revealed in a graphic videotape recorded secretly by a researcher for the Humane Society of the United States and posted on that group’s Web site.
“The problem now is that everything is hidden behind big walls and pinstripe suits. There’s a disconnect between consumers and agriculture,” said Dr. Temple Grandin, Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University and a member of AHA’s Scientific Advisory Board.
“We ought to put it on Web pages. Slaughterhouses ought to have glass walls,” she told Meatingplace.com.
