AUSTRALIA: Vegetable chips spur health alert - (Sydney Morning Herald)

Potentially dangerous levels of naturally occurring cyanide detected in a popular type of snack food have prompted a statewide alert by health authorities.
The NSW Chief Health Officer, Denise Robinson, was cited as urging people yesterday, particularly children, to restrict their intake to no more than 100 grams per day of cassava-based vegetable chip and cracker products.
Cassava - commonly known as tapioca in Australia - contains cyanogenic glycosides, which are usually removed in the processing stage of flour-making.
One NSW-manufactured product - Piranha Vege Crackers, produced by Tixana Australia - was subject to a voluntary recall last month after unacceptable levels were detected, prompting fears that if consumed excessively, cyanide could concentrate in the gut, causing vomiting and weakness.
Yesterday a second warning was issued after a Queensland company and another cassava-based product believed to have been imported from Indonesia tested positive for unsafe levels of cyanogenic glycosides by the NSW Food Authority.
