JAPAN finds second type of pesticide in Chinese dumplings - (Malaysia Star/Associated Press)
February 6, 2008 – 4:44 pmTokyo — Japanese Consumer’s Cooperative Union, a retailer, was cited as saying Wednesday that tests show a second type of pesticide in the brand of Chinese dumplings that have sickened at least 10 people in Japan and set off a nationwide panic over food safety.
The retailer said tests detected the chemical dichlorvos in both the filling and dough of frozen dumplings made in June by China’s Tianyang Food Processing Ltd.
Tianyang is the producer of dumplings contaminated with pesticide methamidophos and blamed for a string of illnesses in western and central Japan since December.
A Co-op spokeswoman, speaking on condition of anonymity, provided further details of the contamination on Wednesday.
Earlier tests late last year on those dumplings found traces of other chemicals but no insecticide. Co-op conducted a second test this week in the wake of the dumplings scare and found traces of dichlorvos on Tuesday, according to the statement.
