PITTSBURGH gets A+ for food safety - (Pittsburgh Business Times)

February 5, 2008 – 4:59 pm

Pittsburgh eateries ranked fourth out of 100 cities in Men’s Health magazine’s study of outbreaks of E. coli-, salmonella-, and shigella-related infections. The city received an A+ for avoiding or containing any outbreaks.
Baltimore was the safest city, according to the magazine, and St. Louis and Richmond, Va., were second and third, respectively.
Lubbock, Texas, was the lowest rated city.
The magazine looked at the Community Health Status Indicator Project reports from each state to determine outbreaks of E. coli-, salmonella-, and shigella-related infections, three of the most common food-borne bugs. Then it checked a Centers for Disease Control’s database to see how many people died from tainted food, and it checked which states have adopted the current version of the Food and Drug Administration’s uniform food code, which contains the most up-to-date rules for keeping restaurant kitchens clean.
