WASHINGTON: Schools keep beef off menus - (Seattle-Post Intelligencer)
February 1, 2008 – 5:31 pmBeef will stay off the menus at many public and private schools in Seattle and around the state for at least a few weeks, as the U.S. Agriculture Department investigates a slaughterhouse that is a major meat supplier for many Washington school districts.
More than 100 Washington school districts can trace at least some of the beef they serve back to the California company, Hallmark Meat Packing Co., which has been accused of mistreating sick or “downed” dairy cows in violation of state and federal laws designed to ensure food safety and prevent animal cruelty.
Experts and education officials said Friday that the meat is unlikely to pose much of a human health hazard and pointed out that there have been no reports of anyone getting sick from the beef.
