CALIFORNIA: Hotel responds to norovirus cases - (Inside Bay Area)

REDWOOD CITY — San Mateo County health inspectors were cited as saying that the upscale Hotel Sofitel in Redwood Shores has cleaned up its act after 62 people came down with norovirus stomach flu following an event there last week.
Beverly Thames, spokeswoman for the San Mateo County Health Department, was cited as saying the celebrants were sickened after attending the Redwood City-San Mateo County Chamber of Commerce annual dinner and awards banquet Jan. 24.
Dean Peterson, the county’s director of environmental health, was cited as saying the hotel kitchen was keeping some food warm under 125 degrees, a “danger zone” below the 135 degrees recommended to prevent the spread of bacteria, and that unsanitary cloths were also used to wipe down kitchen equipment.
Hotel spokeswoman Janice Maragakis was cited as saying hotel staff immediately corrected the problems and did extensive cleaning. Employees were instructed on proper hygiene and food handling, and the […]
