CALIFORNIA: Maintaining green goods safety - (Monterey Herald)

February 3, 2008 – 5:26 pm

Eighteen months after E. coli outbreaks shook the agricultural industry, safety standards for vegetables are, according to this story, still a bone of contention among farmers, regulators and buyers.
Karen Heisler of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, was cited as telling the recent Ecological Farming Conference at Asilomar that farmers lack a unified plan that balances food safety with conservation, said. Some farmers say they are frustrated they have to follow different safety guidelines from different buyers.
Only one of several buyers responded to interview requests, but a representative for the buyer says the guidelines are essential to keep its products safe.
Dale Coke, founder of Coke Farm in San Juan Bautista, was cited as saying safety rules outlined in the marketing agreement were too lax for many in the produce industry, so some buyers drafted their own regulations for their suppliers.
