US: LETTER: Keeping our food safe - (New York Times)

Cal Dooley, President and Chief Executive, Grocery Manufacturers Association, Washington, writes to say that, “For F.D.A., a Major Backlog Overseas” (news article, Jan. 29) is a sobering reminder that the Food and Drug Administration is stretched to its breaking point and cannot fulfill its food safety mandate without additional resources.
Congress must double the F.D.A.’s budget so that the agency can hire more qualified staff and inspectors, invest in advanced technologies and new laboratories, and expand scientific programs. But the F.D.A. can’t bear this burden alone.
Our organization’s Four Pillars of Food Safety initiative requires all companies importing foods to America to meet the F.D.A.’s domestic food safety and quality standards for all their imported goods and ingredients.
Prevention is the essential weapon against food-borne illnesses, and the best way to accomplish that is through a cooperative partnership between the food industry, and American and foreign governments.
