ILLINOIS: Shigellosis bug on the uprise - (PJStar.com)

January 30, 2008 – 6:04 pm

PEORIA–The Peoria City/County Health Department has, according to this story, seen a jump in the number of reported cases of shigellosis, a bacterial infection of the intestinal tract, and advises people wash their hands thoroughly to avoid the bug.
Shigellosis is typically spread by people with the disease, often young children, when they fail to adequately wash their hands after going to the bathroom. Contaminated food can also cause an infection.
Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting and stomach cramps and begin about two days after exposure.
Randall McClallen, communicable disease coordinator, was cited as saying the department fields between 20 to 30 reported cases each year. In the past three to four months, however, about 60 cases have been reported, though not all of the cases have been confirmed. So far, no definite connection has been found between the cases.
