U.S. officials to outline rule for resuming imports of older Canadian cows - (The Canadian Press/Reuters/CBC)
September 13, 2007 – 6:23 pmThe U.S. government is, according to these stories, to announce Friday the rule for resuming imports of older cattle and beef products from Canada.
But it will be at least two months before trade resumes because the rule must first be published in the U.S. Federal Register and cannot go into effect until 60 days after that.
“This rule is in accordance with international standards for countries that present a minimal risk of introducing bovine spongiform encephalopathy,” USDA was quoted a saying.
Currently, Canadian ranchers and feeders can send cattle under 30 months of age to the United States for slaughter, and imports of beef from younger cattle are allowed.
