NEW YORK: Who needs exterminators? Bring on the cat - (New York Times)

December 27, 2007 – 6:49 pm

Anne E. Reuter of Canaan, N.Y., writes regarding, “Guess Who’s Minding the Store?” (news article, Dec. 21) to say that given the new drive for “green” solutions in our lives, it’s unfortunate that the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene inspectors don’t see cats as a pro-environment tool to control rodent infestations in food stores.
Why are cats classified as vermin? They are clean and use litter boxes. A small amount of cat food to supplement their rodent diet keeps them away from food that is sold to humans.
They dispose of mice without using poisons. Chemical poisons, after all, lose their effectiveness over time, are expensive and create carbon emissions in their production and transportation to New York City. Cats are local and have a very small carbon footprint.
