FRANCE: Foie gras removed from market - (World Poultry)

December 28, 2007 – 6:51 pm

French cooperative, Euralis, removed its foie gras products from the market just before Christmas on account of possible microbiological contamination.
According to Euralis, Salmonella poisoning could have been the result of not-recalling the foodstuff. Around 200kg of the product, which is sold in pots of 430g, was produced and prepared for selling on the market.
Fois gras is quite popular at Christmas in France. Elsewhere in the world, French producers have been criticised for the manner in which the animals are force-fed to create the luxury paté.
