BEIJING challenges U.S. over product safety; quality chief urges ban on items of firms China hasn’t cleared - (Wall Street Journal)

Beijing — Li Changjiang, director general of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the Chinese government’s quality-control arm, was cited as challenging U.S. regulators to play a more active role in screening Chinese exports for tainted goods, proposing that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ban Chinese products from companies that haven’t passed muster with Beijing in order to weed out the most flagrant violators.
Changjiang was further cited as saying the government has invested a huge amount of resources in certifying 12,714 exporters — but that the FDA doesn’t even require Chinese companies to prove that they have been certified first by Beijing, adding, “Other countries fundamentally recognize our certificates. The U.S. should not accept customs clearance applications from unlicensed companies. In this way, we could prevent many of the quality problems.”
