OHIO: Skepticism about science fuels milk labeling furor - (Dayton Daily News)

December 22, 2007 – 7:45 pm

In the past two years, milk has, according to this story, churned out controversy among Ohio consumers, dairy farmers and regulators.
First came a stir in 2006 over raw milk, brought on by the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s investigation of a Darke County dairy farm that provides unpasteurized milk to 165 Dayton-area families.
Now ODA has to consider whether to ban labels like “no added hormones” found on some milk at your local grocery.
“Added hormones” refers to rbST. Monsanto sells rbST — recombinant bovine somatotropin — under the brand name Posilac to farmers, who use it to boost milk production in their cows. The Food and Drug Administration approved use of rbST in 1993, deeming milk from treated cows safe.
