The community summary report on trends and sources of zoonoses, zoonotic agents, antimicrobial resistance and foodborne outbreaks in the European Union in 2006 - (European Food Safety Authority)
December 20, 2007 – 7:53 pmZoonoses are diseases or infections that are transmissible from animals to humans. The infection can be acquired directly from animals, or through ingestion of contaminated foodstuffs. The gravity of these diseases in humans can vary from mild symptoms to life threatening conditions.
In order to prevent these diseases from occurring, it is important to identify which animals and foodstuffs are the main sources of the infections. For this purpose and to follow the developments in the European Union (EU), information is collected and analysed from all EU Member States in order to help the Community to improve control measures in the food production chain aimed to protect human health.
