UTAH: Kids’ swim ban extended - (Salt Lake Tribune)
September 12, 2007 – 8:54 pmWhat may be the highest number of cryptosporidium cases reported in Utah in years has prompted the state and a number of local health departments to extend swimming restrictions for children under the age of 5 for another two weeks.
Rich Lakin, manager of the state’s disease investigation and management program, was cited as saying that swimming pools in more than 20 affected counties will also be required to continue “hyperchlorinating” pools to kill the stubborn parasite.
The story says that the restrictions were originally announced on Aug. 28 to control the statewide outbreak. But even after the intervention, cases have continued to be reported in substantial numbers.
Lakin was further cited as saying that in a normal year, Utah generally sees about 30 cases of cryptosporidium throughout the state. As of Tuesday, 1,304 cases had been reported to the Utah Department of Health. Of those cases, 284 people had visited a hospital; […]
