Cherokee -– Public health officials were cited as saying Tuesday they have confirmed eight cases of the diarrhea-causing bacteria shigella sonnei in the Cherokee area.
They also were trying to determine if a virus contributed to the illness that has affected more than 300 people over the past four weeks. The illness caused temporary closure of five childcare centers and at least two restaurants last week.
