CALIFORNIA: Focus shifts to food safety - (Monterey County Herald)

If the signature mark of 2006 in agriculture was crisis, in many ways, 2007 has, according to this story, been about moving forward.
In response to the nation’s largest-ever spinach recall, announced almost exactly a year ago, food safety has been the center of attention. Those who grow, process and package produce from the Salinas Valley and elsewhere have made widespread changes in the way they do business, investing millions into research and technology to assist in pathogen detection and risk reduction.
As a result, the industry has focused stricter attention on animal intrusion in fields — a potential contamination risk, particularly for leafy greens — and measures have been taken to upgrade worker hygiene practices and strengthen quality control. Even in the fields, workers now wear protective rubber gloves and hairnets.
