PHILADELPHIA: Sprout scrubbing important, experts say - (NBC10.com)

September 10, 2007 – 8:25 pm

Sprouts are known to carry the harmful bacteria E. coli and salmonella because the moist conditions that sprouts need to grow also are perfect breeding grounds for bacteria.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise all sprouts, alfalfa, clover, radish and other sprouts be washed and thoroughly cooked before eating.
The CDC also recommends high-risk individuals such as pregnant women, young children, older adults and people whose immune systems don’t function normally avoid sprouts altogether.
If you eat sprouts raw, reduce your risk of food-borne illness. Buy sprouts fresh with the buds on, refrigerate them to slow bacteria growth and wash them under cold, running water.
