Agriculture Secretary reminds PENNSYLVANIANS to practice food safety in power outages - (Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture)
December 18, 2007 – 10:11 pmAgriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff today reminded Pennsylvania residents to take food safety precautions in the wake of power outages caused by winter storms.
“When winter storms hit the commonwealth, it is important to pay special attention to food safety issues,” Wolff said. “Power outages may cause refrigerated food temperatures to rise above safe levels, requiring consumers to check each package of food after power is restored. To be safe, food kept above 40F for two or more hours should be thrown out.
“When in doubt, throw it out.”
When power outages occur, food safety issues require special attention. Refrigerator and freezer doors should be closed as much as possible, helping to keep food at 40F or below.
