TASMANIA: Warning to avoid Christmas food poisoning - (ABC News Online (Australia))
December 18, 2007 – 9:40 pmTasmania’s public health authorities have warned people not to let their Christmas turkey lead to a trip to hospital.
The Environment Health division’s Manager, Stuart Heggie, says there is usually an increase in food borne illnesses, such as salmonella, over the festive season.
Unwashed hands, over-full fridges and improper cooking practices are all common culprits for food poisoning.
Mr Heggie says there are a number of reasons why summer is a peak period for food-related illness.
“It’s really a combination of the warmer weather that we experience at this time of year and the extra burden that preparing meals at Christmas time usually brings,” he said. “You know, obviously, bacteria do really well in warm weather.”
