Norway’s Food Safety Authority was cited as saying the Rikshospitalet University Hospital must take responsibility for a serious incident of listeria infection.
The story says that earlier this week it became known that a pair of unborn twins died after their mother ate a soft cheese at Rikshospitalet University Hospital.
FSA section leader Christoffer Nilsen was cited as telling the newspaper Nationen that the hospital has the responsibility for food safety for everything they serve, and that such cheeses should not be given to pregnant women precisely due to the danger of listeria infection, adding, “Therefore this is a serious breach of the rules which the the managing director of the hospital must take responsibility for.”
Pregnant women are judged to be roughly 20 times more susceptible to infection from the listeria bacteria, which can have catastrophic results for unborn children.
