JAPAN: Japanese sweets maker resumes sale after suspension over mislabeling - (Kyodo News International)
December 5, 2007 – 7:00 pmA time-honored Japanese sweets maker resumed sales Wednesday of its Ofuku Mochi rice cake for the first time since voluntarily suspending business Oct. 30 over false-labeling of the product’s production dates and ingredients.
Masao Kohashi, president of Ofuku Mochi Honke Yugen Kaisha, was quoted as saying, “We’ve caused tremendous trouble (to the public). We would like to make Ofuku Mochi a product (consumers) can buy with a sense of safety,” after submitting a business improvement plan to food safety regulators in Mie Prefecture of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Sales of Ofuku Mochi, however, are limited to the manufacturer’s head office and branches in Ise, Mie Prefecture. The company is not considering selling the product at sales outlets in major cities such as Nagoya and Osaka for now.
