USDA considering first-ever leafy greens regulations - (Santa Cruz Sentinel)

In the wake of E. coli outbreaks linked to contaminated spinach last fall, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is, according to this story, considering first-ever national safety regulations for leafy green vegetables.
Michael Durando of the USDA was quoted as saying, “We’re asking the public if there should be some type of regulatory tool to assist industry in insuring the safety of leafy green vegetable products.”
Durando was further cited as saying one option on the table is a national version of the industry-developed standards that followed the E. coli outbreak and now govern California farmers and leafy green handlers. Though some farmers in Santa Cruz County are unhappy about the regulations, most support national standards.
Michael Dobler of Dobler & Sons in Watsonville was quoted as saying, “We’d get a uniform set of food safety standards. Nothing wrong with that,” adding that he believes that everyone should be held to the standards […]
