CHINA’s Wu `extremely unhappy’ at Mandelson speech (Update1) - (Bloomberg.com)

China’s top trade official, Vice Premier Wu Yi, was quoted as saying she’s “extremely unhappy” about European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson’s speech in Beijing today on product safety.
Wu spoke to reporters at a food-safety conference where Mandelson expressed concern at Chinese counterfeiting and unsafe exports. She didn’t elaborate. The spat extended through the day, with Mandelson later defending the speech.
Recalls and regulators’ warnings about lead-painted toys, toothpaste and seafood have exacerbated trade tensions with the U.S. and Europe. Mandelson described consumer safety as a “zero compromise’ issue, urged China to defend its reputation, and denied Europe was using the issue as an excuse for protectionism.
“During the summer some Chinese officials pointed out that less than 1 percent of China’s exports to Europe had alleged health risks,’ Mandelson said. “But Europe imports half a billion euros worth of goods from China every day — so even 1 percent is not […]
