UK: E. coli hits village - (Newbury Today)

November 22, 2007 – 10:33 pm

A Kingsclere pre-school was forced to close after five cases of the potentially fatal stomach bug, E.coli O157, were discovered in the village.
The story says that three toddlers, an older child and an adult were recently diagnosed with the rare infection, although the source of the outbreak is still unclear. All five are recovering.
The toddlers attend Busy Bee’s Pre-school in Strokins Road, Kingsclere, and at least one attended while carrying the harmful bacteria.
However, the Health Protection Agency stressed that a number of links between the victims were being investigated to establish the original source, and that attendance at Busy Bee’s may be coincidental.
Busy Bee’s voluntarily closed its doors on Monday November 19 and staff launched a deep cleaning operation.
Parents of the 70 children who attend the pre-school were immediately informed of the situation.
The pre-school is not expected to re-open until November 26.
